Alaska rules

Is a home elevator regulated in Alaska?

Who oversees elevators: Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Labor Standards and Safety – Mechanical Inspection Section.

Elevators in private homes

The state adopts ASME A17.1-2016 but leaves out the private residence elevator sections (Section 5.3), so the state program does not inspect or certify home elevators. Local building rules may apply (in Anchorage, the city's Building Safety department handles elevator inspections).

Installer licences

Companies: No. We found no state elevator contractor license. General contractor registration may still apply (unclear).

Mechanics: No. Alaska's certificate-of-fitness categories (electrical, plumbing, boiler and others) do not include elevator mechanics.

Elevator code adopted: ASME A17.1-2016.

Our reading of Alaska’s own statutes and agency pages, checked September 2026. Your city or county may add its own permit and inspection rules – ask your local building department. This is not legal advice.

We have not found a published price range for Alaska alone, so we do not invent one. National published ranges for a two-stop home elevator mostly fall between about $30,000 and $60,000. Compare all seven sources or estimate your project.
