Massachusetts rules
Is a home elevator regulated in Massachusetts?
Who oversees elevators: Massachusetts Department of Public Safety, Office of Public Safety and Inspections – Board of Elevator Regulations.
Elevators in private homes
There is no general exemption. Single-family owner-occupied elevators are a listed class ('R') in 524 CMR 1.06 and go through the state permit, inspection and certificate process, with the permit filed by a registered contractor. Only stair lifts in residential homes are carved out of state inspection (MGL c.143 s.62). We did not confirm the periodic inspection interval for homes.
