Maryland rules
Is a home elevator regulated in Maryland?
Who oversees elevators: Maryland Department of Labor, Division of Labor and Industry – Elevator Safety (inspections); Maryland Elevator Safety Review Board (licensing).
Elevators in private homes
Home elevators are covered by the state elevator law (Public Safety Art., Title 12, Subtitle 8). The state does acceptance inspections of new installations and has posted a notice to contractors about private residence inspections. We did not confirm the exact permit and periodic-inspection rules for homes. Single-family home elevators are exempt from the stretcher-size requirement.

Installer licences
Companies: Yes. The Elevator Safety Review Board licenses elevator contractors.
Mechanics: Yes. The Board licenses elevator mechanics and accessibility lift mechanics. The accessibility lift mechanic license covers private residential elevators.
Elevator code adopted: ASME A17.1-2022 (adopted 6/17/2026).
We could not confirm every detail from Maryland’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.
Our reading of Maryland’s own statutes and agency pages, checked September 2026. Your city or county may add its own permit and inspection rules – ask your local building department. This is not legal advice.
