Hawaii rules
Is a home elevator regulated in Hawaii?
Who oversees elevators: Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, HIOSH Boiler and Elevator Safety (permits and inspections); DCCA Elevator Mechanics Licensing Board (mechanic licensing).
Elevators in private homes
The state's elevator inspection law does not apply to single-family homes (HRS 397-4), so the state does not inspect or permit home elevators. The mechanic licensing law still applies, and a county building permit may be needed.

Installer licences
Companies: Not confirmed. HRS 448H licenses individual mechanics only. Company licensing would fall under general contractor licensing, which we did not confirm for elevators.
Mechanics: Yes. HRS 448H-2 says no one may work as an elevator mechanic without a license, with no private-residence exemption.
Elevator code adopted: ASME A17.1-2010 (per 2014 HIOSH rule adoption notice; may be outdated).
Our reading of Hawaii’s own statutes and agency pages, checked September 2026. Your city or county may add its own permit and inspection rules – ask your local building department. This is not legal advice.
