Alabama rules

Is a home elevator regulated in Alabama?

Who oversees elevators: Alabama Department of Workforce (formerly Department of Labor), Elevator Safety.

Elevators in private homes

We found no general private-residence exemption in Chapter 25-13. The state elevator rules (Ala. Admin. Code 480-8-3) list a $250 permit fee for private residence elevators and inclined lifts, so expect a state permit and inspection. The annual inspection section (25-13-24) states no residential exemption, so ask the department about ongoing inspections.

Installer licences

Companies: Yes. Ala. Code 25-13-4 and 25-13-10 require an elevator contractor license, and the contractor must employ licensed mechanics. A 'limited elevator contractor' license covers platform lifts and stairway chairlifts, including in private residences (25-13-2).

Mechanics: Yes. Ala. Code 25-13-8 licenses elevator mechanics (at least 3 years of experience plus an exam or an approved training program).

Our reading of Alabama’s own statutes and agency pages, checked September 2026. Your city or county may add its own permit and inspection rules – ask your local building department. This is not legal advice.

What it costs in Alabama

We have not found a published price range for Alabama alone, so we do not invent one. National published ranges for a two-stop home elevator mostly fall between about $30,000 and $60,000. Compare all seven sources or estimate your project.

Before you call

Ask each company the same questions – what the price includes, who pulls the permit, what the warranty covers. The ten questions. New to the words? The glossary.
