Is a home elevator regulated in Kentucky?

Who oversees elevators: Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction – Elevator program.

Elevators in private homes

Private residence elevators need a state permit and inspection. 815 KAR 4:025 sets the permit fee and includes up to two inspections, and the contractor must submit a Private Residence Inspection checklist (Form EV-7) before the final inspection. We did not confirm whether ongoing inspections are required.

Installer licences

Companies: Yes. KRS 198B.4009 requires an elevator contractor license.

Mechanics: Yes. KRS 198B.4009 and 815 KAR 4:030 license elevator mechanics, plus a separate 'accessibility and residential elevator mechanic' license for private residential elevators.

Our reading of Kentucky’s own statutes and agency pages, checked September 2026. Your city or county may add its own permit and inspection rules – ask your local building department. This is not legal advice.
